Hey Future-Proof Fam!
Hope your pixels are aligning this week! 👋
Ever dreamed of starting your own design studio but felt stuck in analysis paralysis? I get it. Today, I'm sharing my journey from contemplating a studio launch to hitting $1M in revenue, and the crucial questions that made it all possible.
The "Should I?" Stage 🤔
Starting a studio is scary. Like "staring at a blank Figma canvas with a client breathing down your neck" scary. But smart risk assessment can turn that fear into your superpower.
My Reality Check Framework ✨
When I was weighing up this decision, I had been planning a baby with my partner (talk about timing!) and needed to be strategic. Here's what I asked myself:
- Financial Runway: How long could I sustain myself without income?
- Plan B Strength: How quickly could I land a full-time role if needed?
- Validation Timeline: What would be clear signs of success/failure?
- Personal Factors: How would major life events (hello, baby!) impact this?
The 6-Month Experiment
I set a 6-month trial period. Luckily for me, I got the validation I needed in just 2 months! Sometimes the universe gives you a high-five when you least expect it.
Quick Tips for Your Studio Launch
- Start with a clear timeline: Set a specific trial period (mine was 6 months)
- Define success metrics: What does "working" look like to you?
- Build your safety net: Calculate your runway and have a solid Plan B
- Watch for early signals: Look for momentum indicators in the first few months
The current state
12 months later, we've crossed $1M in revenue. But here's what matters: it wasn't blind luck. It was calculated risk-taking, clear success metrics, and the courage to experiment within safe boundaries.
What's Next?
In the upcoming emails I'll break down the exact steps I took to land our first clients. Trust me, it's not what you'd expect!
Stay creative,
Chris
